I work as a violinist, pianist, session musician, improviser, composer, tutor and workshop facilitator.
I play as a solo player and in groups, ensembles and orchestras, folk rock bands, string quartets, with singer songwriters, in a barn dance band and in free improvisation ensembles. I play classical, folk, blues, jazz, tango, country, folkrock, experimental, scored, improvised and original music and love placing music of different genres side by side. My work as an improviser and spontaneous composer ventures into broad territories of experimental, jazz and contemporary music. I create experimental scores, graphic notation and work with my own images and text to create structured improvisational compositions. My visually stunning graphic score “Four fleck flock” was created to be played by 4 musicians of any level and instrument. It has been workshopped in educational settings with beginner and intermediate musicians and has also been performed by ensembles of leading UK improvising string players which have included myself, Alison Blunt, Sylvia Hallett, Benedict Taylor, Marcio Mattos, Alice Eldridge and David Leahy. I am classically trained and have a PGCE from Goldsmiths, University of London alongside a music degree. I discovered improvising when I was first learning music and it continues to be a huge inspiration to my playing. I have loved collaborating and playing live in gigs with Alison Blunt, Sharon Lewis, Jamie Sturrock, Chris Parfitt, Maggie Nicols, Dave Allen, Paul May, Steve Beresford and Monty Oxymoron. I've played in ensembles with Sylvia Hallett, David Leahy, Alice Eldridge and Marcio Mattos and have played in support bands opening shows for Led Bib, ARC and Polar Bear.
I've played in venues as diverse as The Vortex, Komedia Brighton, Stoke Newington Old Church, Brighton Unitarian Church, Knebworth Barn, Brighton Chapel Royal, The Verdict, New Venture Theatre, At the coach house, Flim Flam club Stoke Newington, Brighton Dome studio theatre, The Brunswick in Hove and Newhaven Fort. |
